Celtics Could Eye Newly Available Rockets Big Man

The Boston Celtics are likely not finished reshaping their frontcourt — and Jock Landale could be a name to watch.

The Houston Rockets waived Landale ahead of his $8 million salary guarantee, making the 29-year-old a free agent. A Saint Mary’s product, the Australian big man helped his national team win bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Landale signed a four-year, $32 million deal with Houston last offseason, averaging 4.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 11.9 minutes over 42 games in 2024-25.

The Celtics’ frontcourt has thinned dramatically since free agency opened. Kristaps Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Luke Kornet signed a four-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs. And now, Al Horford has reportedly drawn interest from the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.

Boston’s only true centers currently under contract are Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman, and newly signed Luka Garza. Josh Minott also joined the roster, but he does not fill the size gap the Celtics need.

Brad Stevens will need to make another move, and Landale could be an affordable option. While his role in Houston was limited, Landale brings experience and size at a time when the Celtics have few proven choices on the open market.

“Boston’s frontcourt is very undermanned right now,” as noted by MassLive’s Brian Robb, pointing to the potential for another veteran addition.

While he’s hardly a game-changer, Boston lacks a steady backup with size, and Landale fits that profile.

With the Celtics currently carrying 15 players, including multiple non-guaranteed deals, the front office still has room to maneuver.

With Horford likely to depart, the decision could come fast.
