Man United eye £10.3m swoop for Brazilian keeper amid doubts over Onana's future

0 2

Manchester United are exploring the market for a new goalkeeper this summer as uncertainty continues regarding the future of Andre Onana.

They have now been linked with Botago goalkeeper John Victor, known as John.

According to Mercado da Bola, United sent scouts to watch John during Botafogo’s FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 clash with fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras.

Bolavip now report that United are keen on signing Victor, and are willing to pay €12 million (£10.3m at current rate) for his signature.

Botafogo owner ‘likes’ the 29-year-old ‘but he doesn’t consider any player non-negotiable’, opening the door for United to seal a deal for him.

John could be a smart signing for Man United

John has been one of Botafogo’s best players since he arrived at the club.

He played a vital role in their Copa Libertadores and Brasileirao triumphs last season. He was named in both competitions’ Team of the Tournament.

He has also been one of the best shot-stoppers in the Brazilian top flight this season, proving that last season’s performance was not a flash in the pan.

The Santos youth academy graduate has recorded an 81.1 percent save percentage, the third-best in the division.

He has prevented 3.4 goals (xGOT), which is only bettered by three goalkeepers.

In addition, he excelled at the Club World Cup, recording an 81.3 percent save percentage – the fifth best in the competition.

The Brazilian keeper was excellent during Botafogo’s surprise victory over Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.

However, considering the pressure of playing for the club, it remains to be seen how he would fare if he joined United.

The Red Devils could sign him as a replacement for Altay Bayindir, allowing him to arrive with less expectation, and potentially challenge Onana for the number one role if the Cameroonian does not leave this summer.
