Ryan Mason makes a big claim about Ange Postecoglou’s legacy at Tottenham
Ryan Mason has suggested that it will take some time for people to fully grasp the enormity of what Ange Postecoglou has achieved at Tottenham Hotspur.
While Spurs fans are now looking forward to the start of the new era under Thomas Frank, they will forever remain thankful to Postecoglou for what he achieved.
The Australian managed to do something that some of the biggest names in world football had failed to do before him: deliver silverware to the long-suffering Tottenham Hotspur supporters, thus ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.
Not all Spurs fans agreed with the decision to sack Postecoglou, with many feeling that he deserved an opportunity to build on the Europa League success.
Ryan Mason on the enormity of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham achievement
What makes the 59-year-old’s success particularly impressive is the fact that he promised that he would deliver silverware to the club and never doubted himself despite the side’s struggles last season.
Postecoglou was ridiculed for saying that he always wins trophies in his second season, but it was he who had the last laugh as the Lilywhites made history in Bilbao.
At the start of his managerial career at West Brom, Mason was asked if, like Postecoglou, would dare to promise a trophy at the Hawthorns, and the 34-year-old responded (via The Guardian): “I’m not in a position to say that. Ange has had an absolutely incredible career.
“I think over time people will start appreciating what he achieved for that club – he was the figurehead of that. In 20 years down the line, if I am able to say that then I’ll have had an extremely successful managerial career.”
Postecoglou’s iconic line will go down in footballing folklore
There are some lines delivered by managers which have been remembered for decades by football fans.
Kevin Kegan’s “I will love it” rant from the 1995-96 season and Jose Mourinho’s “I am a special one” are the most infamous ones.
Postecoglou’s “I always win things in my second season mate” will arguably go down as one of the most iconic lines ever delivered by a manager.
