MLB Insider Connects Pete Alonso To Red Sox

Pete Alonso’s connection to Boston may go deeper than just a fit on paper, which could make him a realistic free agent target for the Red Sox this winter.

The New York Mets slugger, who owns an .859 career OPS and 18 home runs this season, has long been one of the game’s most consistent power threats. He signed a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets in February that included a $10 million signing bonus and an opt-out clause after the first year.

With the Red Sox weighing upgrades at first base, Alonso’s name is beginning to surface — and for good reason.

“He’s better when he goes the other way, but the Green Monster couldn’t hurt, either,” Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote, pointing to Alonso’s offensive profile and a personal tie: his wife is from Boston.

Heyman added that Alonso “embraces 1B” and offers a right-handed bat that could help replace Rafael Devers’ production in the heart of the order.

Since Triston Casas suffered a torn patellar tendon on May 2, the Red Sox have leaned on Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez to cover first base. The duo has combined to hit .315 with six home runs and 28 RBI during that stretch — solid production, but not necessarily a long-term solution.

That leaves the door open for reinforcements. Speculation has swirled around offseason additions, but a trade deadline move cannot be ruled out either. Ryan O’Hearn of the Baltimore Orioles (.294, 11 HR, 30 RBI) and Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers (.239, 12 HR, 41 RBI) stand out as possible deadline targets, though signing Alonso this offseason would represent a bigger, bolder pivot.

If the Mets slugger opts out of his deal after this season, Boston’s need and Alonso’s upside could align at just the right time.
