Rumored Red Sox Trade Target Voted To AL All-Star Team
Phase 2 voting for the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game concluded earlier this week, and it was announced that Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was not selected to start for the American League team.
Bregman, who was placed on the 10-day injured list in May, was unlikely to play in the All-Star game anyway, and just recently began to ramp up baseball activities with a return to the Red Sox lineup still to be determined. Left-handed pitchers Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman remain likely candidates to be named to the American League team when full rosters are announced.
Recent Red Sox trade target Ryan O’Hearn was named as the AL’s starting designated hitter when fan voting ended. The All-Star selection is the first of O’Hearn’s eight-year MLB career, with the versatile Baltimore Orioles slugger earning the selection after the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers on June 15, which increased his voting totals.
O’Hearn is in the midst of a career season with Baltimore and is batting .294 with 11 home runs and 30 RBI in 248 at-bats. His experience at first base has made him a popular name on the trade market, and the Red Sox have been connected to him ever since Triston Casas was sidelined for the rest of the 2025 season after suffering a ruptured left patellar tendon in May.
O’Hearn’s All-Star selection should only increase his trade return if the Orioles decide to be sellers ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. How likely the Red Sox will be to make a deal with a division rival remains to be seen, but Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has continued to state his desire to buy at the trade deadline this year.
