“We are heartbroken” – Liverpool players shaken by devastating Jota news
Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has posted a powerful tribute to teammate Diogo Jota after the Portugal international was tragically killed in a car accident in Spain.
The 28-year-old and his brother were both confirmed dead after their vehicle left the road and caught fire on the A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria.
According to CNN Portugal, the former Wolves forward had been advised not to fly following recent surgery and was making his way to Santander to take a boat back to the UK when the crash occurred.
The football world has been rocked by the news, and tributes from Merseyside teammates are beginning to pour in.
Mac Allister and Szoboszlai break silence with messages
Taking to Instagram, Mac Allister said: “I can’t believe it. I’ll always remember your smile, your anger, your intelligence, your friendship and everything that made you who you were.
“It hurts so much – we’re going to miss you. Rest in peace, dear Diogo.”
Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai echoed those emotions, writing: “Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are.
“Your smile, your love for the game will never be forgotten. We will miss you so much, but you will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Rest in peace, brother.”
Diogo Jota’s Anfield legacy will forever be remembered
Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool and scored 65 goals since joining from Wolves in 2020. He also represented Portugal 49 times, netting 14 goals for the national side.
The versatile forward played a key role in the Premier League title-winning campaign under Arne Slot and had become one of the most trusted attacking options in the squad.
There have been calls for Portugal’s Euro 2025 opener to be postponed after this tragic news which has hit so many, so hard.
