Liverpool fans have been paying their tributes to Diogo Jota outside Anfield after the footballer and his brother were killed in a car crash in Spain overnight.

The two men were travelling in a vehicle which, following a tyre blowout, veered off the road while overtaking and caught fire, with news of the double fatality being reported on Thursday morning.

The footballing world has united in mourning for the victims of that accident, with Jurgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher among those sharing poignant messages on social media.

Liverpool supporters have also been paying their own tributes by making a shrine to Diogo Jota outside Anfield.

A large number of Reds fans have paid their respects to the late footballer by leaving flowers, scarves, flags and shirts near the stadium as they honour his memory.

Some supporters also left balloons displaying the number 20, which was his shirt number throughout his five years as an LFC player and also took on added resonance this year as the club won their 20th domestic league title, to which he contributed.

Diogo Jota will be forever adored by Liverpool fans

It’s impossible to comprehend the scale of loss and devastation that the families and friends of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva must be feeling after this morning’s tragic news.

The Liverpool forward leaves behind a wife and three children, and the couple held their wedding only 11 days ago.

Many LFC supporters have been reminiscing about the numerous happy memories that the Portuguese forward provided throughout his five years at the club, such as his hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Atalanta and his stoppage-time winner in a 4-3 thriller against Tottenham Hotspur.

His legacy will also live on in the chant in his name which was routinely heard at Liverpool matches home and away, and some fans have advocated for the club to retire the number 20 shirt in his memory.

At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
