Tottenham battle London duo for German striker who starred at U21 Euros

0 10

Tottenham Hotspur are now considering making a move for a German starlet, but they may have to see off competition from two Premier League rivals to land the player.

The European U21 Championship proved a great platform for the best young players across the continent to showcase their skills on the big stage, with talent spotters keeping a close eye on the tournament.

One man who undoubtedly saw his reputation grow is German striker Nelson Weiper, who scored four goals in the tournament, including in the final against England, which the Young Lions won 3-2 in extra-time to retain the trophy.

The 20-year-old only played a total of just 698 minutes for Mainz across their Bundesliga campaign last term, scoring three goals and providing two assists, but his performances in Slovenia have brought him to the attention of Tottenham Hotspur and two other sides.

Tottenham are considering a move for Nelson Weiper

The Sun claim that the Mainz starlet’s performances impressed Tottenham’s scouts, who are now closely monitoring his situation.

The report claims that the Lilywhites hierarchy believe that the centre-forward could be a strong addition to their squad and are ‘poised to move’ for him.

However, they face competition from London rivals Brentford and West Ham United, who are also securing Weiper’s signature.

The publication adds that the 20-year-old’s abilities as a target man, namely his aerial prowess, hold-up play and his ability to link up attacks, mean that he is seen by many as a perfect fit for the Premier League.

How much will Weiper cost?

While the striker is technically out of contract, The Sun point out that Mainz have a clause to extend his deal for one more year, which they will activate.

The Bundesliga club’s boss, Christian Heidel, does not want to lose Nelson Weiper to the likes of Tottenham and sees the youngster as a key part of his plans.

However, it is asserted that Mainz will accept a fee of around £12m for the centre-forward, although the German side are expected to push for some add-on clauses in the deal to ensure they receive more cash if he goes on to play for the senior national team.
