Craig Breslow Hints At Red Sox Trade Deadline Plans

The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Boston Red Sox are starting to think about making moves.

They’ve already made the biggest splash of the season when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, but they aren’t done yet. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow appeared on the NESN broadcast Sunday and spoke about what the team is targeting going forward.

“It’s no secret that after Garrett [Crochet], who has been dominant all season, the starting pitching has been inconsistent,” Breslow said. “Consistent starting pitching is definitely going to be a priority for us.”

The Red Sox have a plethora of options. Crochet has been dominant, and Lucas Giolito has been excellent over his last few starts as well. Brayan Bello has been inconsistent, but he put together a run of six-inning starts recently. Breslow mentioned Tanner Houck and Kyle Harrison as options, but also said they want to see what exists on the market.

Breslow was also asked about the financial flexibility that trading Devers provided and acknowledged it as an asset.

The CBO also began to talk about first base as an area to upgrade, but was interrupted by a diving catch and moved on to another thought after the play.

“Money alone isn’t the only way to get players, but the flexibility does give us the ability to take on contracts and take on players. We intend to be aggressive in looking for upgrades. We also have a really deep farm system and the ability to trade from that system to help our big league team.”

With the deadline about a month away, it’s hard to project what players will be available because the playoff picture isn’t clear yet. The Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Athletics, and Colorado Rockies are all likely to sell and could be good trade partners for Boston, among other teams.
