Alex Bregman Resumes Baseball Activities
The Boston Red Sox offense has been scuffling since trading designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on June 15. Following a 3-6 road trip and a sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels, the team began a six-game home stand against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.
There have been hints over the last week that injured third baseman Alex Bregman could return sooner than expected after being placed on the 60-day injured list on May 24. Off to a solid start to his Red Sox career before being sidelined with a quad injury, Bregman’s return could have a major impact on the team’s recently slumping offense.
There was a positive development on Friday regarding Bregman’s status. According to MLB.com Red Sox insider Ian Browne, the two-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner resumed baseball activities for the first time since being injured in late May.
A report from Mass Live’s Christopher Smith added that Bregman took swings before game time and that he’ll add in some field work on Saturday. A better understanding of a rehab assignment should follow next week.
Bregman, who made it to phase two of All-Star voting, was batting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 51 games this season before his injury. The Red Sox have primarily used rookie Marcelo Mayer at third base in his absence. Manager Alex Cora recently said he believes Bregman should be healthy enough to return after the All-Star break.
