Tottenham star told he can extend his career by two years if he leaves Spurs

0 2

Tottenham legend Chris Waddle believes that despite the magnificent service Heung-min Son has given to Spurs over the last decade, it is time for the club and the player to accept the reality of his current situation.

According to recent reports, Thomas Frank has given the green light for Tottenham to cash in on Son, who has just a year left in his contract in North London.

It has been alleged that the Tottenham boss is happy for the South Korean to stay at Spurs, but only if he accepts that a bit-part role during the upcoming season.

In fact, Frank even failed to mention Son among the players he is looking forward to working with, instead naming Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison as the senior Tottenham stars he is excited to manage.

That is seen as evidence by Spurs fans that the 32-year-old’s time at the club might be up and Chris Waddle believes that there cannot be too much room for emotion in Tottenham’s decision.

Chris Waddle claims Heung-min Son is past his sell-by date at Tottenham

It has been widely reported that several Saudi clubs are willing to offer big money for the Tottenham captain this summer and Waddle believes that the club should cash in on the forward.

The 64-year-old insisted that while Son has been a great servant for Spurs, it was clear last season that he can no longer cope with the pace of Premier League football. However, he thinks Sonny could have another two years at the top in one of Europe’s other big-five leagues.

Waddle told OLBG: “Heung-min Son has been a great servant for Spurs and he looks like a great guy. He is one of the most respected footballers in the game. But, all players have a sell-by date.

“If he was playing in a different league in Europe, you’d probably say he has another couple of years, but the Premier League is fast, physical and demanding. You need legs.

“Let’s be honest, last year he found the pace of the Premier League quite hard, even though he was in a bad time, but I think it would suit him to go abroad.

“He’s had a great run at Tottenham. He deserves all the applause he gets, and I think everybody would wish him all the very best. But as I say, when you get into your 30s, sometimes you have to accept it and you have to move on.

“I think Spurs have had great service from him and I think it would realistically they might want him to go to Saudi so they can get a good fee, but on a free transfer to France, Italy, Germany or Spain would be good for him and I don’t think Spurs can stand in his way.”

Is there a chance that Son could stay?

It was claimed by Football Asian two weeks ago that despite all the speculation over the South Korean’s future, Son is likely to remain at Tottenham next season and would prefer to move to Saudi Arabia next summer after the 2026 World Cup.

The same outlet also claimed that the Lilywhites will only let the forward leave for £50m this summer, which reflects his value to the club both on and off the pitch.

It does not appear that we will find out Tottenham’s decision on their captain anytime soon as Spurs are contractually obliged to include Son in their pre-season tour to Korea, which rules out a sale until August.
