Red Sox Player’s Wife Shares Disturbing Social Media Threats To Family
Jordan Whitlock, the wife of Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock, shared troubling messages sent to them on social media.
Garrett Whitlock, one of Boston’s most reliable relievers for most of the season, allowed four runs in Monday’s 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Jordan Whitlock posted threatening DMs sent to their family this week while addressing an on-field heckling incident.
On Tuesday night, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte broke down in tears after an attendee at the Chicago White Sox’s Rate Field heckled him about his late mother. The league indefinitely banned the fan from all MLB stadiums.
Jordan admonished the heckler on Instagram, via the Boston Herald’s Gabrielle Starr.
“This. Is. Not. Okay. Athletes are people too,” she wrote. Not pieces you bet on and earn the right to taunt and degrade … Imagine that’s your friend, spouse, son.”
She then showed screenshots of numerous messages sent to the Whitlocks. One social media user hoped the pitcher suffered a “mind-boggling violent concussion” by getting hit by a line drive. Others contain vulgar language and death threats, and one gambler even wished death on their toddler son because they lost a bet on Monday’s game.
“No one should have to deal with this in any work setting,” Jordan wrote. “Leave people’s families out of it. That line should not be crossed. This is not ‘a part of the game.’ This is unacceptable.”
The Marte heckler wasn’t the first highly publicized case of bad fan behavior this season. Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers received death threats from a “frustrated and inebriated” bettor after struggling in his second start back from injury since 2022.
Jordan warned that these are not isolated events, but a growing norm for athletes and their families in the age of social media and legalized sports gambling.
“I do not share this for pity, only to raise awareness,” Jordan wrote. “Think twice before you heckle or hit send.”
