Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos under fire as details of legal row with Spurs surface

More details about Tottenham Hotspur’s lawsuit against Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Automotive Limited have emerged.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham are suing the company for more than £11 million.

The North London club have accused Ratcliffe’s firm of breaching a five-year, minimum £17.5 million deal signed in 2022 to promote the Ineos Grenadier as their “official 4×4 vehicle partner”.

Tottenham claim the company breached the agreement to pay them a £5m-plus annual instalment, meant to be paid on December 1, 2024.

They also failed to pay ‘an inflation-related figure of almost £500,000 on August 16.’

As a result of the breach, Tottenham now demands a minimum of £5,275,974 in damages.

The particulars of claim revealed that the contract includes ‘annual payments starting at £2.125 million in year one and increasing to £4.6 million in year five, all plus VAT and index-linked to the rate of inflation’.

In their defence, Ineos spokesperson stated they ‘had a contractual right to terminate our partnership contract and exercised that right in December 2024.’

Spurs’ association with Ratcliffe’s Ineos predates the latter’s arrival at United. The petrochemicals company was named the club’s “official hand-sanitiser supplier” during the coronavirus crisis of 2020.

Due to economic reasons, Ineos have embarked on a massive cost-cutting policy, leading the company to cut ties with several sports organisations.

At United, they have enforced stringent financial policies that have pitted them against the fans. They have increased ticket prices and made about 250 employees redundant.

While INEOS have adopted a stringent financial approach across the board—including their partnership with Spurs—they have shown ambition in the transfer market.

They have backed manager Ruben Amorim by signing forward Matheus Cunha and are close to securing a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
