Mason Lohrei Unfazed As Bruins May Begin Without Captain

The Bruins will head into the 2025-26 season with a lot of change.

Boston just rebranded their jerseys, they have a new coaching staff and the Bruins will likely not have a set captain.

New head coach Marco Sturm told the media that he isn’t putting pressure on finding a new captain. He wants to get to know the Bruins’ leadership group before making a decision on if someone will wear the “C” or not.

When young Boston defenseman Mason Lohrei was asked about the decision, he said it won’t make a difference.

“We have a lot of natural-born leaders and guys that have been through it and been on long runs,” Lohrei told NESN’s Sophia Jurksztowicz and Kasey Hudson on “The Hockey Hub” podcast. “With the whole group leadership mindset, by committee, that’s how it’s always been, at least the past two years and what I’ve heard about before.”

Players like David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm, among other veteran players have already been leaders in the locker room for the young guys.

In the reveal of the Bruins’ new jerseys, Pastrnak and McAvoy both had the “A” which could mean the Bruins will just go with the two as alternate captains.

“Those guys are all going to lead in their own ways, but they’re also going to lead together,” Lohrei said. “We have a lot of guys that can step up in different moments and say things.”
