'Was great': 30y/o ace reveals most memorable moment as Man United player
Manchester United have confirmed the release of centre-back Victor Lindelof, whose contract expires at the end of this month.
Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen are the two other first-team players released. However, Evans is reportedly in advanced talks with Man United to become the club’s loans manager for emerging talents.
Lindelof moved to Old Trafford from Benfica in the summer of 2017 in a deal worth €35 million (£29.8m at current rates).
He made 284 appearances for the club and won two trophies – one FA Cup and one Carabao Cup.
The 30-year-old centre-back has chosen the 2023/24 FA Cup triumph over local rivals Manchester City as his memorable moment in a United shirt.
“I think the FA Cup was great,” the defender told MUTV. Obviously, such a historic cup and to be able to win it was amazing.”
Lindelof came on as a late substitute in the fixture, replacing Alejandro Garnacho, with former manager Erik ten Hag preferring Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his starting centre-backs.
The Sweden international made his last appearance for United in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa in May. He described the result as a ‘perfect ending’ to his stay at Old Trafford.
He was limited by injuries last term, but still made 25 appearances across all competitions.
Lindelof has vowed to continue supporting the club and hopes the next campaign will be successful.
“I’m leaving as a player, but I will always be a fan, ” he continued.
“I wish nothing but the best for the guys and everyone around the club. Yeah, hopefully next season will be a little better than this one. I’m very sure it’s going to be.”
With Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, and Luke Shaw, United have enough defensive options to cope with the Swedish centre-back’s departure.
