Man Utd must step up talks to sign Milinkovic-Savic as Napoli negotiate £15m deal - opinion
Manchester United must step up their pursuit of Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic amid concrete interest from Serie A giants Napoli.
The Red Devils are eyeing a new shot-stopper this summer. We believe they could sign a competitor and backup for Andre Onana instead of replacing him.
Altay Bayindir has been unconvincing as a deputy. Manager Ruben Amorim could open the door for a solid replacement for the backup role.
Milinkovic-Savic, who was formerly with the Red Devils for one season, would be a quality acquisition after a standout campaign with Torino.
The 28-year-old made an impressive 132 saves in the Italian top flight last term. He had a save success rate of 76 percent with an xGOT of 10.56 (goals prevented).
The Serbian star also averaged 25 passes per outing with 7.4 long balls per appearance.
His statistics are better than Onana’s. The Cameroonian had a save success rate of only 67 percent in the league last term with an xGOT of just 0.53.
Despite Onana’s brilliant distribution skills, he completed only 4.5 long balls on average.
Fabrizio Romano reported yesterday that Napoli have opened talks with Torino for Milinkovic-Savic, and they are negotiating a deal worth £15 million.
The Italian champions have taken the first step for the player as they ‘anticipate’ interest from United among other clubs during the transfer window.
In our view, United must step up their pursuit of the experienced shot-stopper, who has the credentials to displace Onana for the number one role next term.
Onana looks poised to continue as the first-choice goalkeeper, but the club need a solid deputy behind him to capitalise on any shortcomings in the future.
