Why This Rookie Playmaker Could Be Patriots’ X-Factor

TreVeyon Henderson’s skill set checks a lot of boxes in the Josh McDaniels-led New England Patriots offense, especially for a young team that plans to lean on a versatile backfield.

The Patriots selected the former Ohio State standout in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and early signs suggest he’s adjusting quickly. Henderson flashed burst and agility in spring workouts, comfortably running between the tackles and showing soft hands as a pass catcher. But the rookie knows there’s still plenty of room to grow.

“The intensity of this game is definitely higher,” Henderson said, as transcribed by Christopher Price of the Boston Globe. “The players are a lot faster, stronger, and bigger … I’ve been learning a lot and getting better — trying to get better each and every day.”

As it stands, Henderson figures to operate in a supporting role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. That kind of rotation is nothing new for Henderson, who split time at Ohio State with Quinshon Judkins last season. Despite the shared load, he ran for 1,016 yards, averaging seven yards per carry.

Buckeyes running backs coach Carlos Locklyn praised Henderson’s team-first mindset.
“Splitting carries ain’t bad,” Locklyn said. “He’s not a selfish young man. All backs want the ball, but he understands playing as one.”

In New England, Henderson could ease the pressure on Stevenson, who shouldered most of the rushing and receiving duties the past two years. Stevenson, for one, is encouraged by what he’s seen.

“Explosive,” Stevenson said. “He’s learning pretty quickly. And I’m excited for him.”

McDaniels has long prioritized pass-catching backs — former Patriots Kevin Faulk, Shane Vereen and James White among them. Henderson seems built in that mold. Like White, Henderson stands 5-foot-10, and rarely puts the ball on the ground. Henderson even called White “a great player” who consistently won one-on-one matchups.

Henderson is clear about his goal: earn his spot however the Patriots use him.

“Coach McDaniels … does a great job featuring the running backs,” Henderson said. “Whatever role that I can fit into the team to help the team win, I’m willing to do that.”
