'Until June 2026': Fabrizio Romano confirms new deal for Man Utd veteran

0 8

Manchester United have reached a fresh agreement to extend the contract of veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Man United have agreed a new deal with Heaton that will extend his stay at the club until June 2026.

The 39-year-old has barely had a look-in since returning to the club as a free agent in 2021, more than a decade after his first stint with the Red Devils.

He failed to make a single senior appearance during the 2024–25 season.

His only outing came for United’s under-21 side, featuring in a thrilling 3–2 win over Barnsley in the EFL Trophy.

The decision to retain Heaton seems aimed more at preserving experience within the dressing room than than contributing on the pitch.

Manager Ruben Amorim is likely to turn to a promising academy product over Heaton if a third-choice keeper is needed in a crunch.

Andre Onana is expected to stay put at United despite speculation linking him with a lucrative switch to Saudi Arabia.

He shares a warm working relationship with Amorim and could be given another chance between the sticks next season.

Altay Bayindir has served as Onana’s understudy, but he may be on the chopping block ahead of the new campaign.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the Turkish international is eager to play regular first-team football.

Despite his dramatic shootout heroics against Arsenal, Bayindir has not done enough to stake a serious claim for the number one shirt.

The 27-year-old is tipped to leave this summer, with United actively searching for a dependable second-choice goalkeeper to bolster the squad.
