Red Sox Clubhouse Remaining Focused Amid Chaos
Veteran leadership and being a team player are topics that’ve been widely discussed over the past 24 hours, especially when it comes to the Boston Red Sox.
Rafael Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants due to a variety of factors, including his unwillingness to play the field. Despite the turmoil off the field, Devers had been a key piece of the lineup. He hit a solo home run in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the New York Yankees.
The win was the team’s fourth straight victory and brought them one game over .500. After some rough baseball in May, a sweep of a first-place division rival is no small feat and calls for celebration.
After the game, the team did just that. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported that music was blaring in the clubhouse, and the entire team was celebrating. Except for three figures.
Alex Bregman was reportedly “holding court” with rookies Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony, walking them through their at-bats and offering advice on mechanics.
It’s a testament to Alex Bregman’s leadership ability. Bregman, who’s on the injured list, is doing whatever he can to help the team win. Despite not contributing on the field, the third baseman stepped in to offer advice to young players new to the highest level.
For Mayer and Anthony, it’s a testament to their work ethic. When I was 21 years old, I was much more concerned with partying than I was with advancing my career. Granted, I was in college and not playing for the Red Sox, but it’s a level of maturity that not all young players possess.
While Bregman’s true value comes on the field, his effect on the clubhouse can’t be understated. With a major transaction shaking things up, that kind of leadership and focus on the task at hand goes a long way.
