Former Red Sox All-Star Reacts To Stunning Rafael Devers Trade
The Boston Red Sox stunned baseball fans everywhere when they sent All-Star designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster trade. Reactions were pouring in from everywhere, and that included one of his former All-Star teammates.
Tension between Devers and the Red Sox front office had been hovering over the team to start the season, and it resulted in the team moving him to the Giants in a massive deal. San Francisco is taking on the entirety of Devers’ contract, while Boston landed Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs III, and Jose Bello in return for him.
Considering how Devers is only in the second year of his 10-year, $313.5 million contract, the Giants taking on his entire deal is a pretty big development. Still, it was a major shock to see Boston move on from the face of their franchise.
With this move, the Red Sox officially have no remaining players left from their 2018 World Series team. One player from that squad, Jackie Bradley Jr., immediately chimed in on social media once news of the Devers trade broke.
“The last of us #2018! And my eldest just started crying,” Bradley said in a post shared on his Instagram story.
Bradley played a particularly crucial role in the Red Sox 2018 World Series run, as he earned ALCS MVP thanks to a slew of clutch plays against the Houston Astros. While he only had three hits in the series, two were home runs, and the other was a go-ahead three-run double.
Despite it being only his second year in the majors, Devers was one of Boston’s best hitters during their title run in 2018. In 11 games, Devers hit .294 with a home run and nine runs batted in, and he played a crucial role at the heart of their lineup all year long.
While Devers’ time with the team is over, there’s no doubt his impact on the Red Sox franchise will never be forgotten. Now, the team is aiming to keep their recent positive momentum going in the wake of this trade, as they will look to win their sixth straight game when they take on the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
