Ex-MLB Player ‘Doesn’t Hate’ Long-Term Benefits Of Rafael Devers Trade

The fallout from Sunday’s shocking Rafael Devers trade has continued to reverberate across the Major League Baseball media landscape.

Blockbuster trades of this magnitude seldom please everyone, and so far opinion has been largely mixed regarding how the Boston Red Sox handled trading their disgruntled $313.5 million superstar.

While its certainly way too soon to crown a winner or a loser in the Devers deal, that didn’t stop MLB Network studio host and former player Mark Derosa from looking at the benefits of the trade from the Red Sox’ perspective.

“They [Red Sox] can’t cover it short term, long term, I don’t think it’s a bad move, and I don’t know if they had the ability to shop it the way everyone’s talking about,” explained Derosa.

While Derosa acknowledged some of the challenges Boston’s offense could face if other players don’t step up and fill Devers void in the lineup, he believes the long term benefits of the team having more resources to spend in the future is ultimately a good thing for the Red Sox moving forward.

“Off the top of my head, this year they can go out and reallocate his dollars too,” added Derosa. “But I just feel like this is a situation when I look at it on face value. Short term kills them. Long term, I don’t hate it.”

Regardless of how it all plays out, the Red Sox will try to keep their five-game winning streak alive when they begin a new series on the road against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.
