MLB Writer Cites Three Teams Red Sox Could Buy From Before Deadline

The MLB trade deadline is still a few weeks out, but the landscape has already shifted — and for the Boston Red Sox, the chaos could mean opportunity.

Several American League teams have begun drifting toward seller territory, as noted by Matthew Lenz of Talk Sox. That includes the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics and Baltimore Orioles — all of whom could offer pieces that fit Boston’s longer-term vision.

The White Sox are buried in the standings and likely to offload expiring contracts for controllable talent. While Luis Robert Jr. is the most popular name, his injury history, declining production and Boston’s own outfield logjam likely complicate a match.

However, Boston’s recent history with the South Siders, including the Garrett Crochet deal, makes a phone call plausible. Other names to watch include versatile infielder Josh Rojas and outfielders Michael A. Taylor and Mike Tauchman.

The Athletics’ fall from relevance has been swift. Since starting the season at 22-20, the club without a city has cratered, winning just four of their last 28. They have veteran bats producing well in Miguel Andujar and Luis Urias — both of whom could draw interest from Boston if depth is needed. Jose Leclerc and T.J. McFarland are rental relievers, though questions around health and performance dampen their appeal.

Baltimore is the wild card. Despite entering the year with legitimate playoff hopes, the Orioles are underperforming and likely to listen on expiring contracts.

Starters like Zach Eflin or Tomoyuki Sugano and relievers such as Gregory Soto are all on short-term deals. While it’s rare to see division rivals collaborate, Baltimore’s depth at first base and in the outfield could make Ryan Mountcastle or Heston Kjerstad available. Both are struggling, but carry upside beyond 2025 if the Red Sox decide to gamble on underperforming talent.

Even a month out, it is clear the phones are only starting warm up — and Boston could be on the other line.
