Red Sox Forced To Make This Cut Following Rafael Devers Trade

The Boston Red Sox traded designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

I would not be surprised if you saw that news, immediately closed down whatever device you read it on and walked straight into the nearest body of water, but they weren’t done just yet.

Zach Penrod was designated for assignment in order make room on the 40-man roster, allowing the club to absorb Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison. Hicks will be the replacement for Devers on the active roster, while Harrison will begin his tenure with the organization with Triple-A Worcester.

Penrod, who turns 28 on Monday, missed the start of the season with a left elbow sprain but was activated off the injured list and optioned to Triple-A Worcester in late May. The Red Sox seemed to have him on their radar as a potential surprise addition to the bullpen during spring training, but his injury ended any chance of that coming to fruition.

Boston would almost certainly like to have him back if he clears waivers, but will have to wait a couple of days to see whether or not it’ll happen.
