Alex Cora Hints At Red Sox Making ‘Tough’ Roster Decision
Who will be the odd man out?
The Boston Red Sox will soon be forced to answer that question, as there aren’t enough spots for the amount of healthy contributors they’ll soon have.
Wilyer Abreu went down with an injury last weekend, tweaking his oblique and opening up a spot in the lineup. Roman Anthony was called up to fill that sudden hole, which seemed like a blessing at the time, but will eventually cause problems when everyone is healthy — which the organization expects to be some point prior to next weekend.
Do you send the top prospect in baseball back down? Do you force someone to make a position change? Do you consider moving on from one of the many capable bats in the current lineup?
Red Sox manager Alex Cora shared his vantage point on Saturday.
“We have to make a decision,” Cora admitted Saturday, as shared by WEEI’s Tom Carroll. “We will talk about it, which route we’re going to go, but right now this is where we’re at with these guys. We got this 26 for the next three-or-four days, and then when we have to make a decision, we’ll make a decision… We can only keep 26 here. It’s not a problem, but we have to make decisions.”
Cora’s options are plentiful no matter who is on his roster, but the ultimate decision will be influenced by what is considered the best long-term option.
It’s tough to say what that will be right now, but the likeliest outcome seems to involve a young bat making its way out of the every day lineup.
