Yankees’ Aaron Boone Tossed After Extra-Innings Temper Tantrum

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone watched former Yankees’ catcher Carlos Narváez walk-off the Boston Red Sox during a 2-1 extra-inning victory from the visitors clubhouse on Friday.

That’s because the veteran Yankees skipper was ejected from the game by home plate umpire John Tumpane in the top of the 10th inning after a pair of close plays were ruled in Boston’s favor.

Riding the momentum of a ninth inning Aaron Judge solo blast that tied the game 1-1, Yankees reliever Fernando Cruz was able to keep the Red Sox offense off the board in the bottom inning to send the game to extra frames.

That’s when things began to fall apart for Boone and the rest of his ball club.

With Anthony Volpe beginning the top of the tenth inning on second base, the Yankees attempted to move him into scoring position with a stolen base. But Narváez made a strong throw down to third baseman Marcelo Mayer, who applied the tag, but Volpe was ruled safe.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora quickly signaled for a replay review, and following a mixed reaction from the typically animated Fenway crowd after the play was shown on the center field jumbotron, the call was overturned and Volpe was ruled out.

With two outs in the inning, Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu drove a Garrett Whitlock offering down the right field line for what appeared to be a fair ball. Without sufficient evidence to overrule the play, the umpires ruled the ball to be foul, and that’s when Boone threw his chewed piece of gum on the field, leading to his ejection.

That set the stage for Narváez’s heroics in the bottom of the tenth. With two outs and Rafael Devers standing on second base, the rookie backstop connected on a 89.3 mph fastball from Tim Hill and drove it off the Green Monster to plate the game-winning run.

The Red Sox and Yankees will be back at it on Saturday with Hunter Dobbins (3-1) opposing Carlos Rodón (8-4) on the mound.
