Jermaine Jenas rips into former Tottenham teammate – ‘Technically I just didn’t see it’
Jermaine Jenas has delivered a scathing verdict on his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate, describing him as ‘disappointing’.
Jermaine Jenas has had a rough 12 months. The former Tottenham midfielder was involved in a scandal which saw him lose his job as a pundit on the BBC. Most recently, he has been removed from ITV’s coverage of Soccer Aid, the annual charity football match which raises funds for UNICEF.
However, as a player, he is remembered fondly for the eight years he spent at White Hart Lane. Jenas registered 26 goals and 22 assists in 202 appearances during his time at Spurs.
His contributions helped Tottenham lift the 2008 League Cup, which was the club’s first trophy win in nine years. In fact, it was his free kick which led to the winning goal in the final, which Jonathan Woodgate scored.
Jermaine Jenas blasts former Spurs teammate Edgar Davids
While Jenas gave his best years to Tottenham, one of his teammates was only in North London for a short period. Edgar Davids spent two years at Spurs, arriving after an even shorter spell at Inter Milan.
Jenas has revealed that he was disappointed by Davids, due to his lack of technical ability. However, he still rated his old co-worker, whom he described as a great leader in the dressing room.
Jenas told The Dressing Room podcast: “As I walked in straight away, to be fair to Edgar Davids, Edgar, what I loved about Edgar, there was two sides with Edgar. One was disappointing, and one was like, I can see why you are what you are.”
“The disappointing side is I grew upon the adverts of Edgar. Yeah, but then when I played with him, as much as I loved him, technically I just didn’t see it.
“Was that because it was the end of his career?” Jenas was asked.
“I don’t know because I played against him at Juve as well. And when I look back, all those tricks and stuff, weren’t really a big part of his game, if I’m honest with you,” Jenas said.
“If you ask him to hit a 60-yard diagonal, he could only hit it about 30 yards. You know what I mean? It wasn’t really his bag.”
Edgar Davids had a bizarre career after Tottenham
Davids was a serial champion, winning six league titles and the Champions League. However, his career took a strange turn a couple of years after leaving Spurs.
The Dutchman initially returned to Ajax, his boyhood club. However, he left the Eredivisie outfit and took a break from football, before joining Crystal Palace on a pay-as-you-play deal. He only made seven starts before leaving the then-Championship side.
His next move was the most baffling, as he returned to North London a couple of years later. Only this time, he joined Barnet as a player-manager, where his team were relegated to the Conference Premier in his first season at the club.
