Sunderland transfer target Duje Caleta-Car, who plays for French club Lyon, has been made surplus to requirements by the Ligue 1 giants.
The Black Cats got promoted when they got the better of Sheffield United to lift the Championship playoff final trophy.
While that was welcome news, it has landed Sunderland with a massive challenge when it comes to avoiding dropping straight back down into the Championship from the Premier League next season.
They have lost two of their most promising youngsters in the shape of Tom Watson and Jobe Bellingham already.
The club hierarchy are plotting their transfer business to back Regis Le Bris and they want to make sure that the backline is solid and leakproof.
Sunderland are now keen on Lyon star Caleta-Car, who has previous Premier League experience with Southampton.
And now, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Lyon have put the Croatian central defender up for sale.
It has been suggested that the French giants do not see him as part of their future plans and they will listen to offers this summer.
Caleta-Car is also eager to move on, with the stint at Lyon, who he initially joined on loan in 2023, not having gone to plan.
He had a two-year spell at recently relegated Southampton, where he made 19 appearances, including 13 Premier League games.
The 28-year-old centre-back has close to 150 Ligue 1 appearances with Marseille and Lyon his name, including 32 Croatia caps.
All eyes will be on Sunderland to see if Le Bris’ side will hurry and try to explore a reasonable deal to bring the experienced defender this summer.
They may well face competition for his signature though, with Besiktas and Trabzonspor linked, and will have to present a compelling project to convince him that a move to the Stadium of Light is the right next career move.
