Patriots Hosting Some Intriguing Tryout Players At Minicamp
The New England Patriots had a few extra bodies at mandatory minicamp on Monday, having invited linebacker Wes Steiner and offensive lineman Marcus Wehr on a tryout basis, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
Who doesn’t love a nice longshot story?
Steiner, 22, is an intriguing prospect, having spent the majority of his collegiate career at Auburn (2020-2023) before transferring to Washington State for his final season of eligibility (2024). The Patriots likely are intrigued by his athleticism, having seen him turn in a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and 39-inch vertical jump, both the best of any participants, at his pro day in March.
Steiner was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders on May 12, but waived just days later.
Wehr spent the last six seasons at Montana State, moving around between guard and tackle throghout his tenure with the program. Wehr accepted a minicamp invite from the Seattle Seahawks in April, but was never signed to a full-time contract.
The Patriots likely will keep them around for both sessions this week, with a decision needing to be made on their future before the start of training camp in July.
