Yankees Player Provides Injury Update After Leaving Friday’s Game Vs. Red Sox
The New York Yankees opened a three-game series with a 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox, but not before receiving an injury scare.
Anthony Volpe powered New York to a victory with one of the team’s three home runs. However, the starting shortstop got hit on the left elbow by a Walker Buehler pitch in his next plate appearance. Volpe stayed in the game to run the bases and play defense in the third inning before later exiting the game.
The Yankees announced that Volpe had a left elbow contusion. Volpe later mitigated any long-term concern about the injury.
Although his elbow felt “painful and stiff” after the incident, Volpe revealed that X-rays came back negative. He doesn’t anticipate missing the rest of the Red Sox series.
“Knowing that it’s structurally sound, I’ve just got to get the swelling out. I’m definitely optimistic,” Volpe told reporters. “… I expect to be in there (Saturday).”
Volpe has been a constant in New York’s lineup since making the Opening Day roster in 2023. He’s played in 380 of 386 possible games during his career, receiving just one off day this season.
The 24-year-old takes pride in his durability and hopes to avoid his first trip to the injured list.
“It’s everything to me. It’s how I was brought up in the game,” Volpe said. “You want to be available for the team. That’s the way to be the best teammate. Not just me, but everyone puts in a lot of work every single day to be able to go out there and compete for your team.”
Although he’s hitting .241, Volpe has made progress at the plate. He sports a career-high in walk rate (9.9%), slugging percentage (.445), and barrel percentage (10.4%) after tallying his eighth home run, only four shy of last year’s total, on Friday.
Oswald Peraza eventually replaced Volpe on Friday, so he could get a starting nod if the Yankees proceed with caution and sit Volpe on Saturday. The game starts at 7:35 p.m. ET.
