"Because he was": David Ornstein reveals exact reason why Chelsea did not sign Jadon Sancho from Man Utd

0 5

Manchester United recently suffered a setback as Chelsea opted against signing Jadon Sancho on a permanent deal.

The England international joined the Blues on loan last summer with an obligation to buy for £25 million if they finished higher than 15th in the Premier League.

The clause became valid earlier this year, but the Blues managed to cancel the agreement. The club decided to pay a penalty fee of £5m to nullify the transfer.

Speaking to The Athletic, David Ornstein has now revealed that Chelsea opted against a permanent transfer for Sancho after a disagreement over personal terms.

The reputed journalist added that the Red Devils need to address Sancho’s future quickly, as they consider him someone from whom they can raise some cash.

Shifting his huge wages would have a ‘massive impact’ on their PSR compliance. Chelsea did not pursue a deal for the attacker ‘because he was earning too much’.

He said: “I wouldn’t describe Sancho as returning necessarily. He’s not joining Chelsea, they couldn’t reach an agreement with him on personal terms and therefore they paid the penalty of £5 million that nullified the loan with an obligation to buy from Manchester United.

“The expectation I have is that United will strike a deal with another club. Sancho is assessing his options now, whether it will be in England or perhaps more likely overseas to continue his career elsewhere.

“It is a topic that United need to address with urgency because they see him as somebody who they can raise some cash for. Of course shifting his salary off their wage bill if they can would have a massive impact on their PSR compliance.

“It is essentially the reason why Chelsea have not been able to sign him because he was earning too much money at Manchester United for the Chelsea wage bill.”

United face challenge to offload Sancho permanently

The 25-year-old earns a basic salary of £250,000 per week at United. Chelsea only paid £100,000 weekly during his season-long loan spell, according to Capology.

The Blues attempted to persuade the England international to accept a pay cut for a permanent move.

Their failure to do so resulted in them agreeing to pay a £5m penalty fee for his return.

Sancho is unlikely to stay at United amid his strained relationship with the hierarchy and fans.

His ‘freedom’ comment on Marcus Rashford’s Instagram post did not go well with the faithful. He appears certain to pursue a new challenge, potentially away from England.

United face a task on their hands to offload him permanently. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are keen on landing the former Manchester City graduate.

The Red Devils are open to selling Sancho for less than £20m, but his wages are a huge stumbling block.

If he is reluctant to agree to a significant pay cut, United have no choice but to negotiate another loan.

In that way, they would receive a small fee and could save part of his weekly wages, which could be used to negotiate terms for a new wide attacker this summer.
