MLB Rumors: Former Top Red Sox Prospect Promoted To Big Leagues

At one point in time, Kyle Teel had to have expected this call to come from the Boston Red Sox.

Instead, Teel received a much-deserved call up to the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The 23-year-old catcher will have a chance to make his MLB debut Friday night when the White Sox host the Kansas City Royals at Rate Field.

Teel, who was a top prospect with the Red Sox after being drafted 14th overall in 2023, was the main trade piece Boston used along with three other prospects to obtain ace starting pitcher Garrett Crochet this offseason.

Teel was ranked as the No. 26 prospect in all of baseball by MLB Pipeline and proved worthy of his promotion with a terrific showing for Triple-A Charlotte this season. He batted .295 with a .886 OPS to go along with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 50 games.

The Virginia product went on an offensive tear in the month of May as he compiled a 19-game hitting streak. Teel produced a .333 batting average with five homers and 14 RBIs in May.

It’s not all that surprising that the White Sox decided now is a good time to call up Teel. The White Sox are 23 games under .500 at 20-43, and this comes after a season in which they piled up 121 losses.

Teel will look to provide Chicago with a much-needed jolt and the White Sox could look to give him a majority of the playing time behind the plate over Edgar Quero.

The Red Sox and White won’t play each other again this season, so Teel will have to wait until next year to face the team that drafted him and battle against players like Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, who he came up through Boston’s farm system with last season.
