7/9 duels won, 6 recoveries: Man Utd star delivers fabulous display on international duty, final on Sunday
Portugal progressed to the Nations League final following a 2-1 comeback win over Germany at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
Florian Wirtz opened the scoring for the hosts after the interval, but Francisco Conceicao managed to put Portugal level in the 63rd minute.
Five minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo bagged the winner for the visitors. He had a simple tap-in from a Nuno Mendes assist.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes did not make a direct goal contribution, but he had an exceptional game for Roberto Martinez’s side.
Fernandes provided a key pass to Mendes in the lead-up to Ronaldo’s winner.
Aside from this, the 30-year-old won an impressive seven out of nine duels contested.
The United skipper had 58 touches with 31 successful passes. Operating in a central attacking midfield role, Fernandes also made six recoveries.
The midfielder’s future had been a regular topic of speculation recently with reports claiming that he was seriously considering Al-Hilal’s offer.
However, Fernandes put an end to the gossip by confirming that he turned down the Saudi giants and wants to win big trophies with United.
Fernandes missed out on winning the Europa League with the Red Devils last month, but has the chance to bag the Nations League title with Portugal on Sunday.
Portugal will face either Spain or France in the final, also scheduled to be played at the Allianz Arena.
Fernandes has been undoubtedly United’s best creative player. His burden should be lessened next term with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha has already been signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers while United have recently made an opening bid to purchase Mbeumo from Brentford.
The Bees are expected to turn down the proposal, but Mbeumo has made it clear that he wants to join the Red Devils amid interest from other elite clubs.
