How Garrett Crochet Can Follow Ex-Red Sox Ace Vs. Yankees
The Boston Red Sox only have a few bright sports through the first two months of the season, though Garrett Crochet is absolutely one.
Crochet sports a 1.98 ERA through 13 starts and dominated the Atlanta Braves to finish off a series win over the Atlanta Braves in late May. He’s been the ace Boston had to have last offseason and rolls this season as one of the best pitchers in baseball.
He’ll face one of his best tests in a Red Sox uniform thus far Saturday night against the New York Yankees. He hasn’t allowed a run to the Yankees in three career appearances, though he’s yet to face them since transitioning to a full-time starter last season. These are the teams he has to stop to get the Red Sox where they need to be.
There’s frankly too many comparisons between the aces of the past and present for the Red Sox with Crochet and Chris Sale, though they were back on the mind in May when the lefties dueled at Fenway Park.
Crochet can follow Sale as the “predecessor” immediately went to work with dominance against the Yankees in his first season in a Red Sox uniform. Sale faced the Yankees five times in 2017 to the tune of a 2.65 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 34 innings.
The two lefties also have something in common in a lack of support in their first seasons in Boston. Sale had an 0-3 record in those five starts and never earned a win despite great outings for the Red Sox. Fast forward eight years and the ballclub is just 7-6 in Crochet’s starts despite his sub-2.00 ERA.
Crochet looks to help the Red Sox regain a winning record against the Yankees for the first time since 2023 in this weekend set.
