Player who departed Spurs after Europa League win is ‘flirting with a move to MLS’

0 6

A senior player who ended his Tottenham Hotspur career with a Europa League winners medal could next be on his way to the MLS or Saudi Arabia on a cut-price fee.

Tottenham confirmed on Sunday that four players had exited the club following the end of their contracts.

One of those was Timo Werner, who has returned to his parent club RB Leipzig after an 18-month loan spell with at Tottenham.

While the German struggled to make an impact for much of his time in N17, he will always have the distinction of being part of the Tottenham first-team squad which finally broke the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy.

Timo Werner will leave RB Leipzig for a cut-price fee

German news outlet Bild have now pointed out that the 29-year-old will not remain at the Red Bull Arena beyond this summer as he just has a year left on his contract.

RB Leipzig are said to be keen to take his salary off their wage bill, which they are attempting to reduce by 20 per cent ahead of the new campaign.

As a result, the Bundesliga side are willing to sell Werner for a fee of just €4m (£3.3m) this summer and there are already some clubs expressing an interest.

The outlet claims that a move to Saudi Arabia could be on the cards for the former Chelsea man while the forward is also ‘flirting with a move’ to Major League Soccer in the United States.

Tottenham fans will always remember Werner’s parting remark

The German international failed to pull up any trees during his 18 months at Tottenham and left fans incredibly frustrated at times with his lack of end product.

However, Spurs supporters will remember the cold manner in which Werner signed off following the club’s Europa League win.

The forward took to social media to write: “Like I said, I came to win titles. Thank you and good night!!”, with the post referencing his first interview as a Spurs player back in January 2024 where he expressed a desire to win silverware.’
