Alasdair Gold reveals ‘some fears’ within Tottenham if Daniel Levy sacks Ange Postecoglou

0 2

Ange Postecoglou’s future as Tottenham Hotspur manager continues to drag on amid uncertainty and there are concerns within the club over a potential backlash among his playing squad if he is to be sacked.

Daniel Levy now faces a very difficult decision on Postecoglou’s future, considering Tottenham have had a season of extremes, finishing just above the relegation zone in the Premier League while managing to create history by winning the Europa League.

Over the weekend, it was claimed by some outlets that Spurs had already decided to sack Postecoglou, even though the club had not made an official announcement regarding their decision.

Meanwhile, The Independent’s Miguel Delaney even reported last week that Postecoglou’s chances of keeping the Spurs job had dropped below 5 per cent.

Tottenham fear player backlash if they sack Ange Postecoglou

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that while Postecoglou was expected to be part of sweeping changes behind the scenes at Tottenham in the summer, the Europa League win has now muddied the waters.

He explains that there are some fears within Spurs of a dressing room of a backlash from the supporters if Postecoglou were to be sacked after ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

Some at the club believe that such a decision could spark a negative reaction from the majority of the fan base, while the scrutiny from the media would also only increase, given how Tottenham are perceived.

Additionally, Gold adds that, unlike the previous managers Levy has removed, the 59-year-old retains the support of the Tottenham first-team squad.

Concern over Postecoglou’s successor

Several outlets over recent weeks have named Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola as the top candidates to replace Postecoglou.

However, Gold points out that all of these candidates have led their clubs to a mid-table finish without having to deal with the rigours of European football.

The journalist asserts it would be tough to sell any of these replacements to the Tottenham fan base, thus further complicating Levy’s decision.
