Red Sox’s Marcelo Mayer Shares Instagram Post After MLB Debut

Saturday was a memorable day for Marcelo Mayer, to say the least.

Mayer started the day in Worcester, Mass., where he learned about his highly anticipated promotion to the big leagues. The 22-year-old didn’t have any time to look for his lost car keys, as he was set to play Game 2 of the Boston Red Sox’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

The top prospect didn’t exactly dazzle in his MLB debut — 0-for-4 with three strikeouts — but he showed some promising signs, including sound defense and poise. And even though Mayer didn’t stuff the stat sheet in his team’s 2-1 loss, it still was an evening that he always will remember fondly.

“A day I’ll never forget … thank you to everyone that has helped me along this ride. Go Sox!” Mayer captioned an Instagram post shared after the game.

Fortunately for Mayer, he should have many more opportunities to make a positive on-field impact for the Red Sox, especially with Alex Bregman currently on the injured list. The 2021 first-rounder’s next chance could be Sunday when Boston wraps up its homestand in the series finale against Baltimore.

NESN’s full coverage begins at 12:30 p.m. ET.
