Red Sox Make Roster Move Before Series Finale Against Orioles
Alex Cora on Saturday noted how the Red Sox will “keep working” with Luis Guerrero, who issued three walks over 1 1/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles.
Those in charge of managing the right-hander’s development will be the folks down in Worcester, though.
A little more than three hours before the Red Sox and the O’s kicked off their series finale at Fenway Park, Boston announced it optioned Guerrero to Triple-A following the rivals’ day-night doubleheader. The 24-year-old was sent down so Cora and company could add fellow relief pitcher Zack Kelly to the active roster.
Kelly made the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster and logged seven appearances before he was demoted to Worcester on April 22. The 30-year-old pitched 10 total innings in which he allowed a combined 10 earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts in the big leagues this season. Cora certainly knows what he has in Kelly, who ranked fourth on the team in appearances (49) last season.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Kelly took the mound Sunday, as Boston’s bullpen is pretty overworked. Of course, the Sox will be hoping Walker Buehler follows Lucas Giolito’s lead and pitches deep into the contest.
