Alex Bregman Explains Quad Injury, Early Red Sox Exit
BOSTON — The Red Sox absolutely cannot afford to lose Alex Bregman right now.
He’s been their best player all season long, living up to every dollar of his free-agent contract. Bregman exited Friday’s first game of the doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles with right quad tightness.
Bregman awkwardly rounded first on a hit to left field and immediately motioned for trainers as he walked off the field.
“I was rounding first base and digging to go to second,” Bregman said. “I felt my quad grab. I didn’t continue running to second base for the double. I just stopped and came back to the bag so I wouldn’t make it any worse. I knew I needed to come out and see the trainer.”
“All my strength is still there now, which is good so far,” Bregman added. “Kind of a day-to-day thing at this point.”
Bregman described a “way worse” injury to his left quad during the 2021 season with the Houston Astros. He played just 91 games that season, though he appeared optimistic and hopes to avoid an injured list stint this time around with the Red Sox.
“We’ll see what tomorrow brings, but actually positive from what I initially thought,” Bregman said.
Bregman sports a .299 batting average and a .938 OPS with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in his debut season with the Red Sox.
