Ange Postecoglou tells Daniel Levy why he was wrong about him after Tottenham win

0 4

Ange Postecoglou has recalled what Daniel Levy had said about him when he had first arrived at the club, and the Australian delivered a clear message to the Tottenham chairman after guiding the Lilywhites to the Europa League title.

Postecoglou and the current Spurs squad have now written their names into Tottenham folklore, with the club securing the Europa League for just the third time in its 143-year history, and more importantly, ending their 17-year trophy drought.

An entire generation of Spurs fans had never seen their side lift a trophy, which was why there were tears all around the Tottenham sections at San Mames as emotions were running high after the final whistle.

Daniel Levy paid tribute to Postecoglou and the Spurs players after the win, and the Tottenham boss also had an interesting message to send to the club’s chairman.

Ange Postecoglou recalls Daniel Levy’s previous statement

During the Tottenham fan forum held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2023, Levy made some interesting comments about the club’s decision to hire Postecoglou.

The Spurs chairman pointed out that the club had gone after managers who prioritised winning immediately and decided to turn to a project manager in Postecoglou following those failed experiments.

He said: “I had gone through a period where we’d almost won. With Mauricio, we went through some very good times. We didn’t quite get there, but we came very close and we had a change in strategy. The strategy was ‘let’s bring in a trophy manager’.

“We did it twice and look you have to learn from your mistakes. They’re great managers, but maybe not for this club. For what we want, we want to play in a certain way and if that means it has to take a little bit longer to win maybe it’s the right thing for us. That’s why bringing Ange in was from my point of view the right decision.”

Clearly, Ange Postecoglou did not forget those comments, with the Tottenham head coach referring to Levy’s words in the post-match press conference on Wednesday and telling the 63-year-old that he is a “serial winner”, as demonstrated by his career.

When asked how a club can afford to sack a manager who has delivered Tottenham’s first European trophy in 41 years, Ange Postecoglou responded (via Football.London): “Look, I think I said yesterday, I am pretty kind of not relaxed. Relaxed is not the word because I would be disappointed if we couldn’t continue on this path, but it’s not a criticism. I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person’s vision.

“I remember even when I signed, the club and even Daniel said, ‘we went after winners, it didn’t work and now we’ve got Ange,’ but mate, I’m a winner. I have been a serial winner my whole career. It’s what I have done more than anything else. I know people talk about my football, which I am very proud of.

“I know people dismiss my achievements because they didn’t happen on this side of the world, but for me, they were all hard-earned and all I have done my whole career is win things.

“I understand look, obviously the way things have gone in the league, people are right to be concerned about it, but I don’t think that’s a true reflection of where it is at. Whatever happens, my own belief in what I do doesn’t waver and I’ll continue to push on and do what I do.”

Why Levy and Tottenham hierarchy deserve credit for Europa League success

It is unclear at the moment what the future will have in store for Postecoglou, with reports suggesting that a managerial change is still likely at Tottenham this summer.

However, Daniel Levy and the Tottenham board deserve credit for keeping their nerve and resisting the temptation to sack Postecoglou even though things were continuing to unravel in the Premier League.

They rightly recognised that the players were still playing for Postecoglou and felt that keeping him would be their best chance of Europa League success, and their decision has been vindicated.
