John Terry and James Maddison engage in war of words after Europa League joke

0 4

John Terry has clapped back at James Maddison after his cheeky full-kit jibe during Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League trophy celebrations in Bilbao.

It was all celebration for Tottenham Hotspur after the Lilywhites ended their long wait for silverware, beating Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium.

The celebrations are expected to carry on Friday when Spurs will host an open bus trophy parade with their fans in north London.

It was a goal from Welshman Brennan Johnson that all but sealed the deal for Tottenham, who defended their first-half lead valiantly throughout the second half.

Ange Postecoglou had a few selection headaches coming into the final clash, as three of his most creative players were sidelined with injuries.

Among them was James Maddison, who is nursing a knee injury and is sidelined for three months; however, he did make the trip to Bilbao, with the Englishman cheering on from the stands.

While he did not feature on the pitch, Maddison was right in the thick of Spurs’ celebrations, where he threw a slight dig at former Chelsea man John Terry.

When asked how it felt to miss the final but still be part of the squad, Maddison said: “They said I had to put the kit on to get a medal! I did not want to do a John Terry! When he went in the full kit and his shin pads.”

The former Chelsea then snapped back at James Maddison for the full kit comment, on his Instagram stories, saying: “I remember my first trophy ah bless them.

“Get the tequila out, great season from you boys, you should all be proud 16 to go… After that performance, I think you have a chance. You just have to live for 900 years.”

James Maddison continued the war of words with a message about Terry’s inability to take a joke, which the Chelsea legend responded to with a video of his in-house trophy room. John is clearly a very humble guy.

Tottenham focus turns to UEFA Super Cup

With a European trophy now in the bag, Spurs are now champions of Europe, and no dig aimed at the players or the club would carry much weight as their recent win is sure to silence critics.

Later this year, on August 13, Tottenham would be lining up to play another final, the UEFA Super Cup, and with experience of getting over the line, the Lilywhites would be quietly confident of making it two out of two.

While Spurs are set to feature in the Champions League next season, following their recent Europa League win, Terry’s Chelsea are still in the heat of a top-five battle with a game against Nottingham Forest to come. As it stands, Chelsea could miss out on the big one.
