'They are worse now': Pundit claims Ruben Amorim has had no impact at United

0 5

Manager Ruben Amorim missed the opportunity to win his first silverware with Manchester United, losing 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening.

The Portuguese tactician has endured a difficult start to his reign as United boss, but he could have salvaged something from an already disappointing season by beating Spurs.

A victory would have secured qualification for the lucrative Champions League. United would have earned £15.7 million just for reaching the league phase.

Failure to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition could also result in United missing out on key transfer targets, such as Viktor Gyokeres.

Pundit Steve Nicol has expressed his disappointment with Amorim, claiming the Portuguese has made no impact since arriving at Old Trafford.

He told ESPN FC: “They were mediocre when he came in, and they are worse now. So, there is nothing you can point to and say Amorim has done to improve this team. All he has done is make it worse.

“And he is trying to convince us with this talk of ‘well, you can see what we are trying to do’ – I can not see anything. I do not know what they are trying to do.

“He keeps falling back on ‘we did not get time on the training field.’ Players do not need six months on the training ground to figure out what to do – it is about tweaks.

“At the level of the Premier League and European competitions, it is about refining positioning and decision-making in key moments. This is not U10s football, where you start from scratch. These explanations are not helping – they just make them look lost.”

Key players let Amorim down against Spurs

While Amorim could have made better choices with his starting line-up, the underwhelming performances of key players such as Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, and Casemiro significantly affected the outcome.

Usually a standout performer, Fernandes was outmuscled by Spurs’ combative midfield and missed a big chance to score.

Despite being brilliant throughout the season, he failed to deliver when it mattered most.

Diallo, who has looked sharp since returning from injury, struggled to make an impact at San Mames.

The Ivorian completed just two of his seven attempted dribbles and managed only one shot on target.

Casemiro, the only United player to have multiple European trophies was unable to use his experience to influence the match.

Amorim will need better performances from his key players than what they showed yesterday to succeed at Old Trafford.
