Rising Red Sox Prospect Makes Statement In Triple-A Debut

Jhostynxon Garcia’s unique first name is what stands out initially about the highly touted Boston Red Sox prospect.

But Garcia, who is dubbed “The Password” for his one-of-a-kind name, made sure fans recognized his powerful right-handed swing as well in his debut with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday night.

Garcia smashed a three-run home run with a 107 mph exit velocity deep to left field in the eighth inning of Worcester’s 8-2 win over the Durham Bulls at Polar Park. You can watch the 22-year-old outfielder hit his first Triple-A homer here:

Garcia’s homer, which was his only hit in the game in four plate appearances to go along with a walk, made a strong first impression at the Triple-A level and it’s clear the team thinks highly of him to bat him third in the lineup behind Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer.

“Got to see him run around the outfield,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy told MassLive about Garcia. “He moves around there pretty gracefully, so I know he can defend. (Portland manager Chad Epperson) says he’s a heck of an outfielder and the at-bats have been great….there’s probably going to be some growing pains getting in the batter’s box at a higher level against more experienced pitchers.”

Garcia signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2019, but it wasn’t until last season that he displayed his powerful swing by hitting 23 home runs across three levels of Boston’s minor league system.

He batted .256 with three home runs, 17 RBIs, 18 walks and four stolen bases this season with Double-A Portland before being promoted.

Garcia is ranked as the fifth-best Red Sox prospect by MLB Pipeline, and performances like the one he had Tuesday will make him known more than just for having an uncommon first name and clever nickname.
