How Alex Cora Adjusted This Stance On Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer

BOSTON — Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer don’t have much left to prove for the Red Sox, if any at all.

Sure, there isn’t a perfect roster fit that would trigger the call-up of either player. But at some point, production has to make a decision for Boston. The manager even agreed at the start of the season.

“They’re going to push us to make decisions,” Alex Cora said in March.

Anthony and Mayer both hit to the level that would logically enact promotions to the big leagues. Anthony sports a .322 batting average and a .970 OPS with six home runs in 42 games. Mayer’s OPS dropped a bit below .800 but still tallied eight home runs and 14 extra-base hits thus far in Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox do have constructional explanations as to why both players remain in Worcester, but those won’t make sense for much longer. MassLive’s Christopher Smith asked Cora in Wednesday’s pregame press conference about his comments from March and what the top prospects must do to finally break through and get the call.

“That’s a great question,” Cora said Wednesday. “I understand where you’re coming from. We are where we’re at. Right now, we’ve got some guys here that are playing great baseball. We understand at one point, I do believe they’re going to be part of this. As of right now, they haven’t made that decision.”

So for now, both prospects will continue to punish Triple-A pitching while the Red Sox figure out how to implement them into the MLB roster.
