Brennan Johnson fires warning to Tottenham teammates ahead of Europa League final
Brennan Johnson has issued a warning about Manchester United to his Tottenham teammates as the two clubs prepare to lock horns in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
The pundits appear to be split on who the favourites are for the Europa League final, which is understandable, given that both Tottenham and United have performed extremely poor in the Premier League throughout the season.
Roy Keane suggested that Man United have the edge over Spurs, owing to their history, which is glittered with finals success and silverware.
However, others, such as Gary Neville believe Tottenham have far more quality at their disposal man-for-man than their opponents.
Brennan Johnson says Tottenham cannot take Man United lightly
The one positive for Ange Postecoglou‘s men heading into the final is the excellent head-to-head record they have over their opponents this season.
Tottenham have emerged victorious over United in all three of their meetings this season, but Brennan Johnson has remarked that those results are not necessarily indicative of what will unfold at Bilbao.
The 23-year-old pointed out that all three games have been very different, insisting that the Lilywhites would have to come up with a different plan to overcome Rubem Amorim’s side in the final.
When asked if the three wins against United this season bode well for Tottenham, Johnson responded (via Football.London): “I think we know, going into the final, we can’t rely on the fact that we’ve beaten them a few times this season. I think it’s about now coming up with a plan because each time we’ve beaten them has been down to different reasons.
“I feel like we’ve done good work preparing for Man United, so now it’s about coming up with how we want to win, things we want to do, things we want to stop them from doing, so it’s a new opportunity. We want to prepare and be as confident as we can.”
Johnson says Europa League run has brought Tottenham squad together
This has been a chastening season for everyone associated with Spurs, with things going from bad to worse for the club in the Premier League.
Johnson explained that the Europa League run has not only been a useful distraction, but it has made the squad tighter as they look to create history in Bilbao.
The winger said about Tottenham’s European run: “It’s been a real positive drive for us. This competition … when times have been tough and we’ve had to go to some tough places in Europe and we’ve got some really good results, it brings the squad together a massive amount.
“So the quarter-final, the semi-final … these games have been massive for us. Unbelievable victories, real togetherness. And yeah, it just makes us stronger and more together.”
