Yves Bissouma opens up on his Tottenham redemtpion – ‘He knows I can do the job’

0 25

Yves Bissouma has given a very humble response when asked about his Tottenham turnaround over the last few weeks, and the Mali international insists that he is ready to do whatever role is asked of him on the night of the final.

If you had told Spurs fans last month that Bissouma would be starting the Europa League final, that news would have met with alarm, given that the 28-year-old had gone completely off the boil and found himself falling behind in Ange Postecoglou’s pecking order.

In fact, some might have even wondered if the midfielder had already played his final game for Tottenham, with reports widely indicating that Tottenham had decided to cash in on Yves Bissouma in the summer.

However, the injury to Lucas Bergvall allowed the former Brighton man an opportunity, and he grabbed it with both hands, producing impressive performances in both legs of the semifinal against Bodo/Glimt.

Yves Bissouma credits Tottenham teammates and coaches for his upturn in form

The Mali international has now credited the environment around him for helping him navigate a challenging situation and deliver his best when the big opportunity finally came his way.

Yves Bissouma reiterated the togetherness that exists at Tottenham and admitted that everyone at the club is focused on going one step further and achieving something special at Bilbao.

When asked about stepping up with big performances in the semifinals after a difficult few months, the midfielder told Sky Sports: “It’s not just me, it’s a team. We work so hard – the coaches, all of the staff, the players. We are a Spurs family. This season was really hard for us, and it’s not the time for us to give up. We’re all staying together.

“Maybe you saw me play, but the coaches, the information they gave me, for me to do it on the pitch, the way we train, all these things help me to play like I played. It’s a team win, and I’m really happy for that because now we have what we wanted. Now, it’s one more game, so let’s be ready and go.”

Bissouma was always ready to do what the team needed

Given the displays he delivered against Bodo/Glimt, combined with the fact that Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Lucas Bergvall are all injured, Bissouma is the overwhelming favourite to start in the final.

It is not a situation that the 28-year-old would have foreseen just a few weeks ago, but he insists that he never allowed his head to drop and was always ready to do what the team required.

Bissouma added: “I’m here for my team. Even if I play or not, I always have to be ready. That’s the way I grew up – that’s my mentality. I will never give up.

“The more it’s hard, the more I work hard. I was thinking like, ‘my time will come. I have to be ready if my team needs me, if the coach needs me’ so it was in my mind.

“I was ready before we spoke so that’s not new for me. To come back and play for the important game of the season, it shows how he [Postecoglou] trusts me and he knows I can do the job.”
