Tottenham want to sign Spain U21 international but he prefers Arsenal

0 5

Tottenham Hotspur have been backed to reignite their interest in a La Liga star whom they tried to sign last summer, but the player reportedly wants to sign for their fiercest rivals, Arsenal.

During last summer’s transfer window, a number of outlets reported that Tottenham were front-runners for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Some sources even claimed that Spurs had launched an offer for Garcia, but a move never materialised as the shot-stopper remained at the Catalonian side.

The 24-year-old will feel his decision has been vindicated as he has impressed for Espanyol in his first full season in the Spanish top flight, which has resulted in plenty of transfer interest ahead of the summer.

Joan Garcia set to snub Tottenham in favour of Arsenal move

According to the print edition of AS, the Espanyol number one is on the radar of several Premier League sides.

The report says that Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Manchester City are all admirers of Garcia, while outside the Premier League, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping an eye on the youngster.

However, the Spaniard has allegedly made up his mind that he wants to move to the Emirates this summer.

It is revealed that Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with Joan Garcia, and will now have to activate his €25m (£20m) release clause to bring him through the door.

Tottenham are not likely to sign a goalkeeper this summer

One can understand why Tottenham explored a move for Garcia last summer as the club were still on the lookout for a long-term backup/competitor for Guglielmo Vicario.

However, that situation was solved with the addition of Antonin Kinsky in the January window, who one would expect to serve as Vicario’s main understudy.

Tottenham also have another young goalkeeper who is impressing out on loan in Josh Keeley, who could potentially be used as a third choice next season.

The likelihood of the Lilywhites entering the market for another shot-stopper thus appears very slim.
