Man United player ratings vs Chelsea: Amorim must send 2/10 flop to Championship, Dorgu and Garnacho also disappoint
Manchester United slipped to a narrow 0-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Friday night’s Premier League encounter.
Manager Ruben Amorim fielded a strong side in search of a response following their lacklustre showing against West Ham United.
Harry Maguire appeared to have opened the scoring for United, only for VAR to chalk off his effort due to a marginal offside.
The visitors enjoyed greater control in the first half, but lacked the cutting edge to break Chelsea down.
The deadlock was broken in the 71st minute, as Marc Cucurella headed home the decisive goal after poor defensive organisation from United.
Despite pushing late on, the Red Devils failed to trouble the hosts and looked devoid of ideas in the final third.
With this loss, United remain 16th in the Premier League table, with just one game left in what has been a deeply underwhelming league campaign.
Let’s get into the player ratings.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 5/10
Onana was spared blushes as Enzo Fernandez’s mishit shot bailed him out after he fumbled a routine catch at the cusp of the interval.
Victor Lindelof – 6/10
The Sweden international started at the right side of the back three and completed 90 minutes without making an error.
Harry Maguire – 8/10
Maguire volleyed past goalkeeper Sanchez but strayed marginally offside. Defended with authority and showed ambition by stepping up and distributing boldly from the back.
Luke Shaw – 5/10
Shaw was barely tested defensively but offered little going forward. For a player of his experience, more attacking thrust was expected from the left centre-back spot.
Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10
The wing-back failed to track Cucurella’s run for the opening goal.
Patrick Dorgu – 4/10
Chelsea handed the 20-year-old plenty of space down the left flank, but he disappointed with a lack of end product in the final third.
Casemiro – 7/10
The Brazilian showed his experience with crucial first-half tackles and took one for the team with a tactical foul on Cole Palmer that earned him a yellow card.
Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
Fernandes delivered a brilliant cross for Maguire to score early on but did not get much support from the rest of the United attack. He was taken off in the 81st minute as a precaution ahead of the Europa League final next week.
Mason Mount – 5/10
Mount put in a tireless shift off the ball but squandered a golden chance, failing to hit the target after Diallo picked him out with a pinpoint pass early in the second half.
Amad Diallo – 6/10
Deployed in the right-sided number 10 role, the Ivorian winger showed flashes of intent and forced a save from Sanchez with a decent effort. However, he was largely subdued by the defensive duo of Colwill and Cucurella.
Rasmus Hojlund – 2/10
Arguably, Hojlund was the worst player on the pitch. He offered no threat in attack, lost most of his duels, and looked out of depth at this level.
Amorim may be forced to consider a loan move for the flop striker to a Championship side next season.
Substitutions
Manuel Ugarte – 4/10
The midfielder made a reckless challenge and was rightly shown a yellow card.
Alejandro Garnacho – 4/10
Garnacho was caught napping defensively in the lead-up to Cucurella’s goal, prompting an earful from both Fernandes and Maguire.
Kobbie Mainoo – 5/10
Mainoo failed to have a positive influence on the game.
Ayden Heaven – 5/10
The young defender made his return from an injury and followed Ugarte’s footsteps.
