What This Red Sox Roster Decision Means For Rafael Devers

BOSTON — The Red Sox continue to seek new options at first base.

The platooning group of Romy Gonzalez, Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard bridged the first few series after Triston Casas’ season-ending injury last homestand.

Kristian Campbell took reps at first base pregame Friday afternoon at Fenway Park. The Red Sox already asked Rafael Devers about playing first base, which dominated storylines for days after the fact.

Alex Cora wanted to clarify that Campbell’s reps do not impact the ongoing conversations with Devers.

“That doesn’t have to do with Raffy,” Cora said.

Boston clearly needs a spark and they have internal ways to do that. Putting Campbell or Devers at first base in the near future opens up plenty of roster flexibility for the Red Sox. Those moves can maximize the lineup and allow the ballclub to turn the corner from a .500 start after three full seasons of such play.
