Why missing out on 'very lively' star would not hurt Man United
Manchester United are set to miss out on Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong.
The Netherlands international will likely join rivals Liverpool for £34 million to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Described as ‘very lively‘ by former Leverkusen chief executive officer Rudi Voller, Frimpong would have been a good fit for United.
He has established himself as one of the best right-wing-backs in Europe, contributing 26 goals and 35 assists over the past couple of seasons.
While he would have been a good signing for United, they will not regret missing out on him because they already have good options at right wing-back.
Amad Diallo has been impressive whenever he has played there. Manager Ruben Amorim could deploy the Ivorian primarily as a right-wing-back next season.
Diogo Dalot is another option for Amorim, but he is not as lethal as Diallo in the final third.
However, the Portuguese defender is defensively solid. In the United squad, he ranks fifth for tackles, third for interceptions and seventh for clearances per game.
Noussair Mazraoui is another option in that position. Although he is not as offensive-minded as Diallo and Dalot, the Moroccan provides defensive solidity with his pace and awareness.
With Diallo, Mazraoui and Dalot, Amorim already has enough right-wing-back options.
The club can now focus on addressing the squad’s glaring weaknesses, which will help Amorim achieve the desired results in his first full season in charge.
