Man Utd now eyeing move for 24yo Spanish star, who is "aiming for Arsenal" - report

0 3

Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer, according to Spanish outlet AS (page 12).

The Red Devils are preparing for a busy summer, and a new goalkeeper could be prioritised.

Altay Bayindir has failed to provide strong competition to Andre Onana, and the hierarchy may want an upgrade on the former Fenerbahce man next season.

AS today claim that Garcia is ‘aiming for Arsenal’ and the Gunners are pushing to land his signature.

However, they are not alone in the pursuit. United are among clubs keen on signing the 24-year-old, who has a £21 million release clause in his Espanyol contract.

The clause value could increase to £25m if he is called up by Spain or not sold until the final 15 days of the summer transfer window. Neither is likely to happen, as per AS.

The La Liga outfit seem prepared to sanction an early summer exit.

Man Utd should provide strong competition to Arsenal for Garcia

The Gunners consider Garcia as a deputy to David Raya in goal next season. The Spaniard agreed personal terms with the club last summer and appears keen on the move.

However, nothing is decided at the moment. In our view, United should make a strong effort to purchase the shot-stopper, who has developed into one of La Liga’s best keepers this campaign.

Garcia has made almost four saves per game with a 75 percent success rate. He is good with the ball at his feet and has made several high claims over the course of the season.

Onana’s shot-stopping skills have come under scrutiny. The Cameroonian star has made eight errors leading to goals from last season and has looked reluctant to claim crosses.

Garcia has the qualities to don the gloves ahead of Onana. The Red Devils could convince the Spaniard by assuring him the number one role at some point next season if Onana fails to deliver.

Arsenal may not do the same. Raya has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. It seems unlikely that Garcia will displace his compatriot next term.
